Discover Delta // Sky Deck At Delta Sky Club
By: Thom Filicia, Guest Blogger & Designer, New York
I was one of those little kids that loved going to the airport to watch airplanes take off and land and ALWAYS volunteered to go to the airport when someone was coming to visit. It was an exciting place for me - full of mystery and intrigue. As an adult, and a frequent traveler, that sensation of being excited about air travel still exists, but has been somewhat dampened by the challenges that present themselves within the airport experience. Delta has committed to bringing a bit of that mystery and intrigue back to the airport experience through The Sky Deck at Delta Sky Club.
Whether I’m traveling for business or pleasure, it can be an overwhelming experience. My goal with the design of The Sky Deck at Delta Sky Club was to make the air travel experience less stressful, more luxurious but also a practical and functional space for every type of traveler. It had to include all of the things that you need- outlets to charge your electronics, a great place to sit and be comfortable, a place for your luggage… And I’m happy to say that it has all of that and more. It takes care of the traveler in a way that’s more about the spirit of travel - bringing back that same sense of excitement and wonder.
The airport has always been somewhat of a mystery. What happens to your luggage once you say goodbye to it? Where does it come from when you see it on the baggage claim conveyer belt? It’s all very Wizard of Oz.
The Sky Deck sort of pulls back that curtain. You’re not only seeing what’s happening on the tarmac, you’re feeling it and you’re watching it as it’s happening. To be able to see the ground crew, the service vehicles, all the behind-the-scenes action shows the confidence and pride Delta feels in their process. I think it also shows a great sense of modernity. To have all of this happening just a few yards away while the passengers are able to relax in an environment that’s comfortable, stylish, and sophisticated… It is truly paving the way for a new standard of travel.
My hope was that The Sky Deck at Delta Sky Club feels like something you’d want to have in the backyard of your own home. A space that looks inviting, feels familiar, yet retains an easy elegance that represents both the Thom Filicia and Delta brand - this combination of characteristics makes the Sky Deck come alive and gives it a strong point of view and soul.
As a designer, you’re always looking for projects that fuel your passion for design and challenge you in new ways. To be given this opportunity to work with a great brand like Delta and to be tasked to create an environment in uncharted territory has been great inspiration for me. I’m thrilled and honored to now be able to open the door, walk out onto the Sky Deck and really experience the innovative, functional and beautiful space that this partnership between myself, Delta and Architectural Digest has made possible.
