Inside Delta // 21st Century Tools for our Flight Attendants
By: Robyn Klein, Director, Delta Onboard Services Strategic Planning, Atlanta
The next time you fly, you may spot a new piece of technology in the hands of our flight attendants. The sleek new handheld they’ll be sporting is aimed at making the travel experience better for our customers. Starting today, our in-flight professionals around the world will begin using an innovative Windows Phone 8-based handheld device that streamlines the process for purchasing items on board and puts key flight information right at their fingertips.
The device, a Nokia Lumia 820 developed in partnership with Microsoft, Avanade and AT&T, is another investment in technology that we’ve made to benefit our customers as well as our employees on the ground and at 30,000 feet. The cell phone-sized touch-screen device allows our in flight team to offer real-time credit card processing for on-board purchases, including upgrades to Delta’s Economy Comfort seating, convenient eReceipts that can be emailed to customers and retrieved via the delta.com receipt hub, quicker transaction processing times and other important flight information.
We’re bringing the latest technology on board our planes to enhance the customer experience and enable our flight attendants to better serve you. And we’re not stopping there: Delta is continuing to develop tools for our 19,000 flight attendants to offer customers more personalized service and up-to-the-minute flight, weather and connection information specific for each of our 160 million yearly customers. We’ll also store manuals and important reference documentation on the device to virtually eliminate the need for printed materials. The reduction in paper usage and weight means we can be more fuel efficient and environmentally friendly.
In the last several years, Delta has invested billions in customer and employee technologies aimed at enhancing the overall flying experience. We have more than 800 aircraft equipped with high speed wireless internet — the most in the industry — and we continue to develop our award-winning Fly Delta mobile app for iPhone, iPad, Windows Phone and Android platforms. On the ground, our new and intuitive website allows you more control when purchasing your ticket, checking the status of a flight and managing your SkyMiles account while revamped kiosks at our airport locations allow you to check in faster and more efficiently.
Our 19,000 flight attendants are excited about the investment we’re making to enhance the onboard experience and we look forward to serving you on your next Delta flight.
