Throwback Thursday // Salt Lake City Winter Games

Delta flew the ‘02 Winter Games flame from Greece to Atlanta, then volunteers carried it in a torch relay from Atlanta to Salt Lake City.
The Boeing 777 was painted in a Salt Lake City Winter Games scheme featuring images of gold medalist speedskater Bonnie Blair, ski jumper Duncan Kennedy and luger Ryan Heckman. During the 11-hour flight to Atlanta, the flame was housed in a specially designed miner’s safety lantern and attached to the bulkhead wall inside the aircraft where it remained lit without refueling.
Delta employees were among the 11,000 torchbearers who carried the flame in a torch relay to Salt Lake City, visiting more than 80 cities over nearly 14,000 miles. Before arriving in Salt Lake City, the flame was also airborne at four points along the route by Delta Connection carriers, including SkyWest Airlines, which flew the flame to Alaska, the first time the flame visited that state.
