Paris // The land-locked city boasts its own beaches during Paris Plages, when a section of the Seine’s banks is transformed into three pedestrian-friendly, artificial beaches. The stretch from the Louvre to Pont de Sully (nearly two miles long!) provides deck chairs for sunbathers, while the Bassin de la Villette hosts beach volleyball and kayaking. Through August 17. Washington, D.C. // Book lovers flock to the Library of Congress National Book Festival, where more than 100 authors read their work, sign books and talk to readers. Listen to presentations, attend panels by your favorite writers or snap pictures of the kids with their favorite characters from popular picture books. August 30. 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Walter E. Washington Convention Center.
Budapest // The island of Óbuda becomes the Island of Freedom for a week when the Sziget Festival takes over the city. Attracting nearly 400,000 music lovers from more than 80 countries around the world, this year’s big acts include Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Lily Allen and Bastille. August 11-18. Óbuda Island.
Los Angeles // Art comes to life at the Festival of Arts’ Pageant of the Masters in Laguna Beach. Real people pose in elaborate sets to recreate famous works of art, both classic and contemporary. Set to live orchestral music at an outdoor amphitheater, this year’s show, The Art Detective, reveals mysteries about the world’s greatest masterpieces. Through August 30. Irvine Bowl on the Festival of Arts grounds.
